In our quest to create our dream lives, one thing often takes precedence – our well-being. After all, a life filled with health and vitality sets the stage for achieving all our goals and dreams. But how do we unlock our best selves and embark on a journey to wellness?

In truth, this was not something that even entered my mind in my 20s or early 30s. My idea of a healthy lifestyle was going to a Zumba class once a month and only binge-eating one chocolate bar a day, not two. I really did not know what a healthy lifestyle was and knew even less about implementing it. I think the reality of it for me was that I really did not know how to properly look after myself, and I did not feel like I was worth looking after.

Self-care is, after all, a dedication to your best self and giving love to yourself. One of the most enlightening questions to ask yourself is why you don’t think you are worthy of this.

Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, taking long walks in nature, or indulging in your favorite hobbies, self-care is essential for your journey to wellness.

If you are living a perpetually busy lifestyle, this can at first seem like an impossible task. So start off small but be diligent. I remember a time when the idea of taking 15 minutes out of my very important day to do something just for myself seemed out of reach and unattainable. Yet I started off doing just 15 minutes of meditation or yoga a day, and then I added in learning a foreign language.

Nowadays, I spend say on average I dedicate around 3-4 hours a day, every day, to my wellbeing. I feed stray cats in a park in Italy which ties in cute cats and exercise – a win-win situation. I make sure to have a nice relaxing shower each day and brush my hair, and I even have a skincare routine nowadays. Try introducing new positive habits into your daily routine and gradually build them up.

Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle

Wellness is closely tied to lifestyle choices, the two go hand-in-hand together. While a healthy lifestyle encompasses a huge range of things, three of its key elements are a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. How many out of the three are you winning at?

It can seem that getting all these three running smoothly is not realistic, but I am here to tell you that they are. It might not happen overnight and you might never get to a perfect lifestyle, that does not exist. Think of it rather as a journey in a certain direction, and even if you go off track, know that you can make your way back on track. Use these “off-track” moments as learning opportunities and stick with it. These fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle have the power to improve your overall health, boost your energy, improve your mood, and pave the way for your dream life.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Your mindset plays a significant role in your overall well-being. Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Visualize your goals and believe in your ability to achieve them. You are what you think and your life will only ever be as good as you can think it. This is why a millionaire with ten fancy cars in the garage, a mansion in an exclusive area, unlimited holidays and money to spend on anything they want can be as miserable as sin. I don’t believe that things make you happy anyway, it comes from within. However, a positive mindset not only enhances your well-being but also attracts new opportunities and success.

Connect with Others

Many of us live quite disconnected lives in today’s modern society. The village that was meant to help raise our children is often in their own homes dealing with their stresses and as such we are left alone. Yet, connection is one of the key markers for happiness and a long life. Therefore, building and nurturing meaningful relationships is a vital aspect of well-being, and not just online, but in person.

Make a concerted effort to build meaningful connections and nurture them. Surround yourself with supportive and positive individuals who encourage your growth and well-being. The same goes for limiting the amount of energy you spend on people who do not have your best interests at heart. Now there are some influencers who would say just plain cut toxic people out of your life, but I appreciate it isn’t always as simple as that. Just be aware of who you are giving your time and energy to and look to build more positive relationships in your life than negative ones.

Practice Mindfulness and Stress Management

Stress is a serious matter nowadays and according to the Mental Health Foundation, a 2018 study showed that 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope in the past year. 46% of respondents said that stress led to them overeating or eating unhealthy options and 29% said it caused them to start drinking alcohol or to increase their drinking. The report also found that many of the people who suffered from stress also reported psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression, self-harming, and even suicidal thoughts. If this doesn’t ring alarm bells then I don’t know what will.

The study listed a number of causes for the stress including concern over debt and housing, appearance and body image, pressure to succeed, other long-term health conditions, needing to respond instantly to messages, and comparing themselves to others.

Modern-day society feeds off stress, so what can you do to combat it or drastically reduce it? Take time to work out what your key stressors are in your life or whether you have any recurring triggers. What can you do to better cope with them? Incorporate mindfulness techniques and stress management practices into your daily routine. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, and journaling are excellent ways to reduce stress and enhance your overall well-being.

To unlock your best self, it’s crucial to have clear and achievable goals. What I see often happen is that people set these really big goals and yet they do not physically plan how they are going to get there. Before you know it, life gets in the way and the goal gets pushed to the side until the next New Year’s resolution.

That’s why getting your eye on the prize and breaking it down into manageable chunks that you are going to actively track and ensure you achieve is crucial.
